Matthew Nelson is a Data Acquisition Intern at Smarty and is currently completing his Master’s degree in geology and planetary science at Brigham Young University. With a deep appreciation for the natural world and a mind trained to analyze it, Matthew brings a thoughtful, investigative approach to his work. His background in geospatial analysis, GIS, and SQL equips him to track down, evaluate, and refine the data that keeps Smarty moving forward.

Matthew approaches data the way a field scientist approaches research—with curiosity, rigor, and a respect for detail. He enjoys the challenge of uncovering patterns, validating sources, and ensuring that what’s built on top of the data is strong and reliable.
