Duncan Beutler
Software Engineer

Duncan didn’t initially set out to become a software engineer—he sought a career that could build something lasting and provide for a family someday. While studying mechanical engineering at BYU-Idaho, he discovered a love for math and problem-solving. That curiosity led him to code in Go, Python, C#, Ruby, Java, Swift, PHP, and JavaScript before ultimately finding his groove in React, where he now brings the Smarty website to life.

For Duncan, building new pages and fixing broken ones is a creative rush. Watching his work take shape on screen delivers that “quick dopamine hit” that keeps him reaching for the next challenge. He thrives in collaboration, partnering with teams across marketing, product, and backend engineering to turn complex ideas into impactful digital experiences.

When a stubborn bug appears, Duncan’s belief that “there’s always an answer if you’re brave enough to ask” drives him to find it. That same curiosity—and courage—guided him from a star-gazing morning run to a career he loves. Along the way, he found more than a job at Smarty; he found a community so meaningful that he even recruited his wife to join the team. Because for Duncan, building software is really about building connections—between code, people, and the things they create together.
